The story of Thee Desperado:
The tiny bay colt struggled to his feet in the small barn. Nuzzling
his dam, a brand new mother, he searched for his first meal. Nervous and unsure,
she refused to feed him. The mare’s owners quickly called an experienced groom
for help. When Shawn Crews arrived from Arabians Ltd., she took one look at the
foal and envisioned him as a star, as she recalls, “I just knew I had never seen
a foal like that, and I knew we had to have him.”
With her help and companionship, the colt who would one day be king of Arabians Ltd. overcame many obstacles to begin a legendary life. Nineteen years later, Thee Desperado has surpassed all expectations created for him, and his legend still grows…
Thee Desperado is one of the most famous representatives of one of the rarest bloodlines in the world, the Straight Egyptian Arabian. He also holds the unmatched distinction of being the world’s leading living sire of these horses. Thee Desperado is the most famous living treasure of this ancient equine treasure, and he embodies the dedication and careful planning of hundreds of breeders across the centuries, from the Bedouins of ancient Arabia to the small breeder in modern Texas.
Champion and Champion Sire
A national champion himself, Desperado exists also through his champion offspring, who dwell on every inhabited continent. His ardent admirers include the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, top Arabian trainers and breeders around the globe, and native Egyptians who are importing his descendants back to Egypt.
Desperado’s show and breeding records are evidence that breeders from
all Arabian bloodlines recognize his abilities and beauty. In 1993, he was named
to the Top Ten at both US and Canadian Nationals. In 1994, he was named Region
9’s Grand Champion Stallion, Scottsdale’s Unanimous Grand Champion Stallion, and
US Reserve National Champion Stallion—what a year!!
Since that ‘sweep’ of championships, one of his most celebrated accomplishments is that of being named Overall Leading Sire of the Egyptian Event for 10 years straight, from 1996-2006, an unprecedented accomplishment among straight Egyptians worldwide. Desperado himself was named 3 Year Old World Class Colt Champion and earned the Junior Champion Colt title at the 1992 Event, but never earned the Supreme Champion Stallion title—it is now jokingly said that he has had his revenge through his babies over the last 15 years.
The producers behind Disney’s IMAX adaptation of the beloved Walter Farley novel The Young Black Stallion selected one of Desperado’s sons, the South African Champion Stallion Thee Cyclone (x The Minuet), to embody The Black on the big screen.
He competed successfully in Western Pleasure classes and, at 19 years
young, still loves being ridden at the farm. His sons and daughters have
excelled not only as halter horses, but as performance horses, proven by his
Overall Leading Sire title at the Egyptian Event, as well as his offspring’s
wins in Class A and Regional performance classes.
